Reading Strategies, Parts of Speech & Story Elements

These are the reading strategies, parts of speech and story elements that we have covered in 1B this year with the definitions that we use when we talk about them. We will do some mini-lessons about some of them, but you can use these pictures as reference tools if your child is talking about on of them and you are not sure what they mean, or if you want to introduce/explain a concept with Grade 1 appropriate language.

My Winter Friend Poem

  • Day 1: Do the highlight, circle, draw activity page (page 2 of booklet).
    • Need: 2 colours of pencil crayon or marker and pencil
  • Day 2: Use the word bank to complete the poem (page 3 of booklet).
    • Need: pencil
  • Day 3: Put the sentence strips in the correct order (pages 4-6 of booklet).
    • Need: scissors and glue

Snowmen at Night

  • Day 1: Put the parts of the story in order on the Snowman at Night page.
    • Need: scissors and glue
  • Day 2: Write at least 3 things your snowman would do at night on the If I were a snowman… page, then draw one of the things with your crayons on black paper.
    • Need: pencil, eraser, crayons or pencil crayons (especially white)
